Fender 51 Precision Bass Reissue Relic
This bass was purchased new as a project bass a few years ago. It's a 90's Fender 51 Reissue P Bass. This is not one of the Custom Shop Relics. All of the distressing and part additions were done by me to emulate the character of an older P bass. I stopped short of going overboard and intended the regular play and use to continue the natural wearing patterns. A cigarette burn here and there or a weathered gouge could be a nice touch. The exposed wood will continue to darken and gray with play and age.
The body was completely stripped of it's heavy polyester finish and recoated with nitro butterscotch and nitro laquer. The neck was completely stripped and recoated with amber tinted nitro laquer and given a new decal. From the factory, the bass came without covers, thumbrest and a case. All of these items were added to complete the package. The front cover has been left untouched. Not being satisfied with the factory pickup, I swapped it out with a Seymore Duncan Antiquity. Much better response now.
The bass plays as well as these old reissues can, as the originals are known for being a bit bulky. Nonetheless, it was taken out and professionally gigged on several occasions with most questioners wanting to know how old the bass was because they could "tell it was an old one". Many didn't want to believe me when I told them "a couple of years". Of course this bass won't fool anyone who knows what they're looking at but it sure produces the illusion.
